First off, sorry I have been all trick and no treat. I’ve got a lot of balls in the air right now and they are all falling at once, in rapid succession. Hopefully I have more time in the coming weeks to bake more! We certainly are having the weather for it.
Speaking of trick or treating. Grrr. I’m not really a fan of the holiday in general these days. Mostly because of how rude children have become. I had more than a handful of kids let me know my candy choice sucked. Gee thanks. So does your attitude. And the worst was a little kid, all of about 7 who after receiving candy from me told me “your dog is ugly and nasty”, stuck out his tongue at me and then ran. I tell ya, if I had any sort of aim that kid would have been pegged in the back of the head with a Starburst. But alas, I throw like a girl. 🙂 And so with my luck I would have hit a nice kid.
I did luck out and see a Boba Fett for the first time ever. He got extra candy. What was your favorite costume you saw?
I will say I did luck out in the sense that the teenagers who trick or treated this year actually dressed up. Which truthfully I don’t care how old they are as long as they put some effort into it. My favorite was the boy that had to be about 15/16 years old. Wearing footie rocket ship pajamas. Now that takes guts. And also amazingly, first year no one smashed our pumpkins.
Lots and lots of cookbooks are coming out right now. I’ll actually do a whole cookbook list for you in the coming weeks. One of the ones I got was Chewy Gooey Crispy Crunchy Melt in your Mouth Cookies. I saw a recipe for mini sticky buns that didn’t involve yeast. Thought they would be perfect. The whole plan was to adapt them and use leftover Halloween candy instead of a pecan (like mini snickers or mini milky way). Except between pre-Halloween consumption and the volume of kids coming through I had none left. Whoops. Oh well. So I made them the original way.
These are not super soft yeasty goodness buns, but they would be awesome and fun to serve at a brunch. Very easy and very quick to make.
Hope you all survived Halloween and are ready for November.
Sticky Pecan Bites
24 pecan halves
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
¼ tsp. salt
¾ cup heavy cream
½ cup brown sugar, packed
½ tsp. cinnamon
2 TBSP. unsalted butter, very soft
Preheat oven to 400F. Grease a 24 cup mini muffin tin with baking spray. Set aside.
Place a pecan half in each cup, top side down.
Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Make a well in the center. Pour the cream into the well. Using a rubber spatula, fold and stir the flour mixture and cream together just until the dry ingredients are entirely moistened and a soft dough is formed.
Let dough rest for 2 to 3 minutes.
On a lightly floured surface, with a floured rolling pin, roll the dough into a 12-x-7 inch rectangle. Spread the dough with soft butter and sprinkle with brown sugar.
Start at one short end, roll the dough tightly. Gently stretch the dough to lengthen the roll. Cut eh roll crosswise into 24 pieces. Place each piece in a muffin cup, cut side up.
Bake 12-15 minutes, until well browned. Rotate pan halfway through. Immediately turn the buns out onto a sheet of parchment on a heat proof surface. Serve on the day you make.

Those look perfect. I would think they were safer than a big old bun until I ate all 24.

How rude of the kid! You should have used your hockey stick and whipped a slap shot at the kid’s head. You would have hit him then 🙂

I definitely saw a wide variety of strange costumes (I work at Cornish College of the Arts). I saw Taylor Whats-his-name from Twilight (basically a guy wearing nothing but jean shorts), a male Julia Childs, a male Lady Gaga, lots of zombies/dead promqueen type getups…My favorite was Sunday morning around 8 am, biking through Ballard, I saw a guy dressed as Fred Flintstone definitely doing the walk-of-shame home. Priceless.

I so hear you on the kids these days. I keep saying I hope I am not around when they are in charge of the world. I didn’t have any tell me my candy sucked but had several tell me what they wanted out of my bowl.
I love sticky buns. YUM!!!
Felice says
My girls knew the drill growing up. After receiving the candy it was thank you and Happy Halloween to the giver, or the candy went back. I agree with Lena, I bet you wouldn’t have missed with a hockey stick in your hand. Score! Reese’s Cup to the back of the head. I am just joking about dinging a little child but, seriously, could people please start teaching their kids some manners? My favorite costume was a home-made one where the child was dressed as a piece of Lego. It was very creative.
The buns looks delicious. And I hope you get control of your balls 😉

we live on some acreage with no street lamps… no rude kids knocking on our door – GOOD thing, I don’t know if I’d give them candy!! 😀
these bites look perfect… YUM

they look fantastic! Halloween is not a tradition thing here, so no kids come for trick or treat. *phew* 🙂

A rude kid! Those buns looks so scrumptious.
Cheers,

I know what you mean kids can be so rude. We had some come to our door and they were far too old for trick or treating really. They hadn’t made any effort just a white face with normal clothes. They didn’t even say ‘trick or treat’ just stood there with their bags so I just looked at them until they said something. It was more like begging than a fun event for little kids.
Chloe says
Stomach, growling, *so hard*.
And I agree, kids. Meh. One of my co-workers actually saves the candy that isn’t given away during trick or treating this year for NEXT year, so it gets reeeally stale, and then puts it into a separate bucket that she grabs whenever teenagers come to the door. Evil, yet…genius? 😀

Wow these look so good!

I live in a condo and my daughter is grown and living on her own so I can easily forget that Hallowe’en exists at all.It would have been the perfect night to make some sticky buns!!

Dude! What the heck is wrong with kids? I had a kid who, after I put 2 pieces of candy in his bag, stood by the bowl and asked if he could have one of everything. I also had a kid who just took a handful himself after I had already put candy in his bag. RUDE!
When I was a kid we took what we got and said thank you and moved on to the next house. It’s not like I was young that long ago. I’m only 24! Sheesh.
Maura says
LOVE Boba Fett! The cutest costumes I saw were at a volunteer event I attended. There were a lot of fancy store-bought costumes, lions, bees, pigs. They looked absurdly expensive, but who am I to judge. When I was a kid we made our costumes (hello, Dr. Pepper can, circa 1989).
Anyway, I have always wanted to make sticky buns but have been scared of the dough and… eating them all. These look like a great way to break myself in easy!
Nicole says
We only had one kid come to the door, the girl who just moved in across the street. She had a great costume!
Those loook so tasty, and no yeast! I might try these this weekend for a special treat.
Erika says
I blame parents for all the bratty, pesky little kids running around! IF they didn’t like my candy, I think I might have just taken it back. Punks!
But I digress….the mini sticky buns look delicious!
Eliana says
Hmmm – these look picture perfect. And I have a funny feeling that I could devour an entire batch if I had them in front of me right now.
Carolyn Jung says
I love these! I think they are the perfect size. So often when you eat an entire sticky bun, you feel like you’ve so over-indulged. With these tiny ones, though, you don’t feel weighed down.
Joanne says
I can’t believe the kids were so rude!! What was THAT about? Weird. I appreciated whatever candy I could get when I was a kid. No chocolate bar was left behind.
Love how easy these cinnamon buns are. Especially because my life is rarely ever put together enough for me to plan to put cinnamon buns together enough ahead of time for them to rise!

Mmmmm – those look great! And I am always amazed at how rude some kids are — and then how sweet other ones are. And there’s no way to tell who will be who! But no one — no one! — should say anything bad about the dog. Ever.
katie says
My favorites were a kid in a very well done Michale Jackson gettup and a Dad dressed in a huge hand crafted spongebob costume! I did see one teenager in a black garbage bag…lacking a bit of effort!
the sticky buns look yummy!

What type of candy did you give out?
Speaking of kids, how is the substitute teaching going?

OMG. As a new mother (my son is only 10 months old), your post really struck a chord with me. I cannot imagine how horrified I would be if my son were to take candy from you without saying “thank you,” let alone telling you your choice of candy wasn’t up to snuff.
The sticky buns look great. No yeast? I’m in! As much as I love the yeasted variety, they take so long that I always end up eating them for dinner .
Well, gotta go practice signing “thank you” with my son. Never too early to make sure that he isn’t the rude kid…
Deborah says
It was raining here, so we got all of 4 groups of trick or treaters. So lots of extra candy here!! These look delicious and I’m all for a faster sticky bun!
Elizabeth says
Oh would everyone stop with the kids being rude thing. Its not their fault, its how their parents are raising them. And Halloween isnt just for litle kids…why would it be when little kids dont eat all that candy, and honestly their parents wouldnt let them anyways. Stop being so judgemental about teens, they like halloween too, they want to dress up and get free candy just as much as little kids. Most little kids dont even get halloween or would even know when it is if it werent for their parents, take for example my friends 6 and 3 year old. They were told to pick out a costume and wore it when their mom told them too, they got tired of t or t after 30 minutes and had a whole pillow case (between the 2 of them) full of candy. Their mother let them keep a few and threw the rest out…oh yeah you read that right! So to say that teens are greedy and rude is wrong, atleast they appreciate the candy, granted some of them can be rude or innapropriate, but atleast they dont throw away $50 worth of candy instead. This is why I think its stupid when yall say hallowe’en is for little kids. No little kid needs that much candy! Everyone wants to know our teens are getting pregnant and having sex and doing drugs, but its because we take away their fun when they wanna go trick or treating and we tell them their too old, and rude, and greedy. Nice, society!
BTW what kind of candy did you hand out? Maybe it did suck!
Peabody says
Too bad you didn’t actually read my post. At no time did I say Trick or Treating was for little kids. I also said I didn’t care if teenagers trick or treated as long as they actually had a costume.
Sour Patch, Sour Punch, Snickers (full size), Peanut Butter Cups (full size), Starburst (full size), Skittles (full size) both regular and sour flavor.

One kid had on a homemade vending machine – it was unique and very nicely done. It was a painted box – at the top was a section of little windows with candy bars. On the side was a “coin slot” area where you could deposit the candy. Creative!
Love, love the pecan recipe – I have a tree in the yard and am always looking for something tasty! Thanks for another great one!
Laura says
Sounds like good candy to me! lol Maybe she is referring to the posts by other users in your comments when talking about halloween being for young children.
Mrs. L says
Sounds like your candy definitely did NOT suck! I would have loved any of it.
The Godkids went as characters from the book The Hunger Games. Not a single adult knew who they were.
We saw many Star Wars characters though most came from The Clone Wars cartoon (which we love 🙂
It was a strange Halloween as the weather was warm and most folks that were home had their TV on to the Giants World Series game. Can’t tell you how many folks apologized for taking so much time to answer the door because they were watching the game.
And we made sure the kids said please and thank you!
Can I come trick or treat at your house? I’ll take any of the candy you gave out or these sticky buns.
Nutmeg Nanny says
Such yummy sticky buns 🙂 I unfortunately only got 3 groups of trick or treaters. They also unfortunately took all my Reese’s cups. Whats wrong with Kit Kat’s?
