I have no idea why women (and some men for that matter) want to be a princess. This week of course was all about the Royal Wedding. I have nothing against the royal couple or their wedding, and wish them nothing but the best. Kate seems like a perfectly lovely girl and she looked very stylish and tasteful in her wedding gown this morning. But I so would not want her life…ever.I know women love the idea of getting to wear fancy dresses and buy whatever they want all while wearing millions of dollars in royal jewelry. Big deal! This doesn’t come from a place of jealousy I can assure you. I can’t be jealous of someone who is constantly under the eye of the media, and in Kate and Williams’s situation, an entire country…and even this country. I know plenty of people who woke up early to watch the wedding or recorded it to watch later. I was not one of those people.
Being watched and photographed wherever you are is not my idea of fun. Always having to be polite. Gain a few pounds and you are ridiculed. Lose a few pounds and they claim stress in your relationship. Never running to the Circle K in sweatpants. 🙂 Never getting to give someone the bird when they cut you off in traffic.
Many of my friends hosted brunches and took off of work to watch. Making tea sandwiches and scones. I went in an opposite direction. Messy cookies that are anything but royal. They are just cookies filled with random Easter candy. I had mini peanut butter cups, Robins Eggs, and Pretzel M&M’s so that’s what I put in mine. You can put whatever. It’s just a way to use up what is sitting in my Hello Kitty basket.
That’s it today, I have an ear infection and am down and out. Hope you have a great weekend.
What about you? Do you want to be a princess if you could? If so, why?
Not So Royal Leftover Candy Cookies
1 cup brown sugar, packed
½ cup powdered sugar
1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 tsp. vanilla extract
2 eggs
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
½ cup Pretzel M&M’s
½ cup mini peanut butter cups
½ cup Whoppers or Mini Robins Eggs
Preheat oven to 375° F.
Using a stand mixer, cream butter, sugars, and vanilla extract together on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
With the mixer on low speed, add the flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix until fully incorporated.
Fold in the M&M’s, peanut butter cups, and Robins Eggs, and try to distribute them evenly (ha).
Bake for 8-10 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.

I agree with you about not wanting to become a royal. I just want whatever man I marry to treat me like one!
and I’ll take one of those cookies, thank you! They look tastier than the earl grey shortbread cookies I made to eat for breakfast (which were very tasty!)
Coco says
No thank you! I wouldn’t want to be royalty at all. Can you imagine the public scrutiny? Yeesh.
Kristina says
Yum! I agree. I wouldn’t really want to be a princess; I’m happier letting her be one and being spectator 🙂 It will be a ton of pressure, and for the rest of her life. All the cool stuff that goes with it will make it more tolerable, if that’s any consolation. Nevertheless, what an honor for her and her family, and she’ll experience amazing things along the way. I think she’s suited to the office, but most of us wouldn’t be, and wouldn’t want want to.

as i was watching coverage of teh royal wedding this morning, i couldn’t help but think of your post on “With this shallowness, I thee wed…”. it’s kind of the same thing to me- i think Kate and Wills seem like they could be nice enough people, and they’re certainly lovely, but no way i’d want to be his princess- or anybody’s for that matter!
Amy says
I recorded the wedding and thoroughly enjoyed watching it. A very teeny tiny part of me thinks being a princess would be fabulous. But then real life takes over and for all the reasons you stated being her would be horrible.
The cookies look super yummy!
Nancy @ Roving Lemon's Big Adventure says
No way do I want to participate in any part of that spectacle, other than from the comfort of my own living room. But I did DVR it–purely as an excuse to bake and eat scones. And later I’ll be stealing your cookie idea to get rid of some of the Easter candy lying around here.
EG says
We have jelly beans, M&M’s, and Peeps. Probably not the best cookie material!
Cara says
I was so sick of looking at Easter Candy yesterday that I threw it all away. No one even notived!
Lisa says
The only way I would ever want to be a princess is if I was in love with a prince. I’m not, thankfully. But I do think that love makes you do things that are extremely difficult. Your not-so-Royal cookies look “Lovely”. Toodle-loo….
kellypea says
Sorry about your ear. Wincing on your behalf. No, wouldn’t want a life with that kind of responsibility. People think it’s special, and it obviously has special qualities, but it would be like living in a glass house. And if you’re not doing anything juicy, the media makes it up. Not to mention, those who aren’t rich think the rich do nothing. I think I read that Prince Charles had in excess of 700 “engagements” last year. That’s insane. I don’t care what kind of jewels are involved or what kind of car you get to ride in. Pass me those cookies.
Kristina @ spabettie says
I definitely would not want that life – it is not your own at all, and I cannot imagine how gracefully I would be able to handle press and photographers. 😉
I did watch, I made the chocolate biscuit cake, got caught up in the people watching and am fascinated by fascinators!
I love these kind of cookies…

Im planning a left over candy pound cake for later this week. LOL
Feel better! xo
And no way in hell Id wanna be a princess.

I have to admit when I was a little girl I wanted to marry Prince William (he was a prince who was exactly my age!)–probably because of all of those books and movies that told us that’s what we wanted. But I agree with you–it would not be worth the crazy scrutiny!
I’d rather eat these cookies.
Lisa @ The Cooking Bride says
No, I would not want to be a princess. You are basically living under a glass. I bet it’s very lonely.
Heidi @ Food Doodles says
I totally agree. No way I would ever want to trade places with her. I’d never want to be a princess period. But I do understand the little girl wanting to be a Disney princess kind of dream. It might be because I have a one and a half year old who has princess underwear and loves them more than anyone should love underwear. I hope you feel better soon!
Loooooove cookies with all sorts of different leftover candy in them. I just wish I had leftover candy 🙁
Lauren says
Well, I totally woke up to watch this morning. But – I agree. I’d NEVER want that life. I DO, however, really want your cookies!
Becca says
I think I would like to be a princess, but only if it were princess to a very small country and…well I wont go into detail because then you might think I’m insane 😀 However, everytime after I’ve thought about becoming famous I immediately reject the idea, because I don’t like having the spot light on me and plus the media sucks. So I guess I’ll just be the princess of my own brain, ruling all of the little voices in there 😉
These cookies look so yummy by the way. The last picture makes me drool so much because you took a bite right in the center of what I think is a reeces mini cup and it just looks so melty and mmmmm.
hobby baker says
LOL, lovin’ this post. Totally digging your add ins! Hope you feel better very soon! ♥

I could not stand living my life under such scrutiny and critisim as Kate will have to face. I also did not feel the need to take off work or wake up at the crack of dawn to see proceedings which will be all over the news for weeks to come.
We did, however, host a Tea Party at work, which was nothing more than an excuse to drink hot tea, and eat finger sandwiches and lots of cookies! 😀
Rosa says
I don’t like monarchies and find all this stuff so lame! ;-P
Those cookies are far more interesting than any prince or princess.
Cheers,
Rosa
Felice says
I would not swap places with her in a million years. I did watch part of the ceremony and as they said their vows I couldn’t help but think that this poor girl’s life will never be the same. Her life will now be lived in one giant fishbowl. I love scones and tea, but I like to make my own.
Sorry to hear about your ear infection. Take care and I hope it feels better soon.
Joanne says
I was thinking about this today too actually and it just seems like by marrying a prince you are just getting yourself into way more than you would bargain for. Nothing will ever be simple, ever. Not that it ever IS…but this would be so far askew from simple! Too much.
I wish I had easter candy…I so need some cookies in my life!
Martha says
I’d love to be a royal for the clothes and the household help. But not being able to go out the door looking less than my best would get to be a drag….
Lauren at Keep It Sweet says
I totally agree- I’d never want to be in the spotlight like that and have all the responsibility of being someone watched all the time!
Lynn says
People who crave celebrity attention don’t get all that it entails. Being under the media microscope would be my nightmare. I’m really happy with my jeans and yoga pants and costume jewelry is much less stressful to wear than crown jewels!
Hannah@ Bake Five says
eh, I rather be the princess in my own right… hahaha. nevertheless, to be married into a royal family (even the rich) can be beyond royal pain
Jeanne H says
Days later:
Hopefully your ear infection has cleared up by now.
I was intrigued by the cookies with Reese’s Mini’s in them, so I bought a couple bags (coupons!) just so I could make these cookies. I also have some Whoppers on hand, so maybe I’ll try some of them in the cookies as well. Since DH detests malt balls, that is one way to keep him from gobbling them up! 😉
I did get up early to watch the royal wedding, and wished I had gotten up even earlier to see more of the guests arriving, but that’s what all of the books and magazines sure to come will be for. William and Kate should have a better marriage than his parents did. W & K are the same age and have known each other for years. I wish them well. And no, I wouldn’t wish to live my life so much in the public eye (have been known to ignore a ringing phone and doorbell!), but Kate seems to have learned how to cope with it.
