When I first saw this event I decided to ask my “American” friends what they thought of when I said the word Canada. Hockey, beer and maple syrup…oh and Canadian Bacon(it’s called back bacon people!!!) All good things but I found it humorous that those were pretty much the same four answers I got over and over again. I did get a Bryan Adams the singer and “cold” thrown in now and then for good measure.
If I hadn’t felt so crummy as of late I would have made something involving back bacon and beer for the savory event that Jasmine is holding…I might just do that for me anyhow. π
Since I was only going with the one event, Mmmm Canada(the sweet edition), hosted by none other the Domestic Goddess herself, I settled on good ol’ maple syrup(Canada does after all make more than 80% of the world’s supply). Most people in the states think maple syrup is Mrs. Butterworth or Log Cabin…ugh(so does, surprise…my husband). Oh the horror. FYI- none of those actually contain any maple syrup. Lucky for me more and more places are carrying actual maple syrup and people got to stop sending it to me since I could get it here.
Maple syrup comes in different grades, but I am a grade B girl myself. I like the flavor better for baking and cooking. And speaking of baking, I made a maple syrup pie. It is a combination of my friend’s(from Quebec) recipe and a recipe I found in Sweets, which was interesting since it is a southern cookbook. You can use just about any type of nut, but you really do have to love maple syrup to eat this pie. I used the cream cheese pie crust that I used for my salmon quiche since I had some left over but you could use whatever pie crust you like.
Hope everyone who celebrates it has a great Canada Day!(it’s July 1st if you didn’t know)
Maple Syrup Pie
1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
2 ΒΌ cups maple syrup(the real stuff)
ΒΎ cup heavy whipping cream
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
4 eggs
1 cup pecans, roughly chopped
Preheat to 375F.
In a large bowl, whisk together maple syrup, heavy whipping cream, and flour until blended.
Add eggs one at a time, making sure the it’s blended well.
Fold in the pecans.
Pour the filling into the prepared pie crust.
Bake for 10 minutes. Reduce the heat to 350F and bake for another 30-35 minutes or until the filling is set.
Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack for 30 minutes before serving. I serve mine with maple whipped cream as well as more maple syrup poured over each slice. But I love me some maple sryup.

Good golly miss molly, that is just food porn to the extreme! I wish I could teleport a slice here now! Or failing that, get a giant jug of maple syrup π And with a cream cheese crust too?! Awesome.

Lydia (The Perfect Pantry) says
Ask my Canadian husband what he associates with Canada, and he’d say hockey, maple syrup, and poutine, in that order. So glad you didn’t make a poutine pie!!
MyKitchenInHalfCups says
I’m on board for this one Peabody!
Ha who am I kidding, everything you put up here calls to me because it always has that extra! 2.5 cups of maple syrup! Wow that is some pie. Pecan would be my choice! You got me again.
Rosa says
OMG, I am drooling! That pie looks terribly scrumptious and ever so “dirty”!!! Yummy!
Cheers,
Rosa
breadchick says
OHHHHH CANADA!!! How sweet your maple pie.
Peabody, I’d say you pretty much nailed it to the flag pole.
Now, if you could have found a way to incorporate Molson or Labatt Blue into that pie crust…. (he-he)
Dana McCauley says
Happy Canada Day back at you!

I just stocked up on maple syrup since it was on sale at Whole Foods. (don’t all women do that). What a great recipe. Love that crust more though, mmm, nothing like a perfect crust.
Amy says
Mmmmm, maple. Grade B is my favorite, too. It amazes (and horrifies) me that people actually use that artificial maple-flavored corn-syrup based junk and call it “maple syrup”…the real stuff is so good, as you say! Love the idea of this maple pie, especially with the maple filling pleasantly oozing out of the slice. Yummy! π
noble pig says
Oh how yummy! Log live Canada and anything with maple syrup!
rainbowbrown says
That crust sounds just wonderful. I’ll be giving it a try sometime, no doubt. It’s a lovely looking pie.
VeggieGirl says
Haha, that sign/photograph is too fun!! :0D
I too prefer Grade B maple syrup – much more body and flavor, in my opinion. That maple syrup pie looks PHENOMENAL!!
Shari says
That looks so delicious, especially with the pecans! I’ll have to try it since I have a ton of maple syrup sitting in my pantry. I love that first photo!

Oh, I’m with you on the Grade B REAL maple syrup thing. It’s all I ever have on hand (TJs is a good source.) I used it in my butter tarts this week (instead of corn syrup π ) At Thanksgiving, my pecan pie is loaded with pecans (natch), bourbon, and maple syrup. It’s the best!!! Love your pie!
Kate says
This totally reminds me of those great Canadian maple candies I used to load up on during trips to Montreal.
Laura says
YEEOUCH! I think I have a cavity – and it looks soooo worth it!
If you asked me about Canada – I would say Mike Myers and anybody of SCTV π
Judith says
This *looks* very tasty, but I have to ask – is it anything like butter tart pie? A Canadian friend strongly recommended that one to me, and I made one – and nearly DIED. I like sweet things as much as the next woman – in fact, I’m Southern and drink sweet tea regularly, but something about that tart was just SO sickeningly syrupy sweet that I had to throw it away.
Mrs. L says
When I think of Canadian food my first thoughts go to Jagr Mac & Cheese, Lindros Corn Flakes and Irbe jello…Canada actually puts hockey players on their foods! Anytime I made a Sharks road trip up there I had to go to a grocery store and stock up (yes Mr. Boarder Man I’m bringing back Jello from Canada).
As for the syrup, I have glass bottles of the stuff in the shape of a maple leaf but I have no idea if it is actually from Canada or not!
ashleystravel says
Wow! That looks so amazingly delicious. I will have to try it when my brother-in-law (a Canadian) comes for a visit.
Aran says
you go girl! i like all that pride! and what can i say about the pie… hmmm… sweet, sweet, sweet!
becky says
maple syrup pie…interesting. the pecans are what draws me in though, i love a good homey pecan pie. happy canada day!
Red Icculus says
I think of Molson beer when someone says Canadia.
What’s weird is Foster’s is a Miller product, it is marketed as Australian, but it is brewed by subcontract in a Canadian Coors brewery. Weird, eh?
Pamela says
Sheesh, that looks AMAZING!
leslie says
That pie looks out of this world!!!
giz says
Yee Haa!!! What a fabulous pie – with real maple syrup in it – be still my heart. Love the flag – Psychgrad wore the tee shirt all through her travels to Europe – love it!! Canada rocks!!!!

joey says
Happy Canada Day to you!!! π I have never been to Canada…I would love to see it someday…and I am pretty sure I have never tasted real maple syrup either…yikes! Will hunt it down here…they may have it in the specialty shops π
Nut and syrup in a pie and I am there! π YUM!
Garrett says
Um…yum? This looks great! I love a good maple syrup when I can get my hands on some good stuff, plus if I made this it’d be a good excuse to get rid of those extra pecans I have laying around.
Jen Yu says
Honestly, it shouldn’t say “Canadian Girls Kick Ass” but rather “Peabody Kicks Ass” π That little pie dish is so damn cute! I do hope you are recovering because your blog can never have too much bacon (none of our blogs can ever have too much bacon, hon).
Patricia Scarpin says
I first tried maple syrup when Brilynn sent me a bottle by mail last year. I loved it!
What an amazing pie, Peabody.
Lyra says
Oooh maple syrup. I’m gonna have to give this pie a try sometime-its like a pecan pie, but with a pint of maple syrup, so how could it be bad?
FlaNBoyant Eats says
Maple syrup is great on a lot of dishes. every blue moon I’ll take a spoonful right to my mouth! If candian girls make desserts like this, then yeah, they kick butt!Nice Molly!
Deborah says
I grew up on the fake maple syrup, and didn’t try the real stuff until I had a Canadian roommate in college. It took me awhile, but now I love it – especially in baked goods. This looks great!
Ashley says
Looks great! And the cream cheese pie crust sounds so good. I don’t think I’ve ever had a crust with cream cheese. I’ve never had maple pie either as I always scared of how sweet it would be!
Candace says
Sorry to tell you, but when I think of Canada… I think of Celine Dion. Not a good thought… I much prefer Hockey over Celine!
brilynn says
It’s practically a crime not to love maple syrup! That looks awesome!
Lynn says
What a great pie. To me pecan pie is always for Thanksgiving, but I’d be mighty thankful if someone gave me a slice of this right now. With ice cream, please.

I love that it looks Southern and yet it is 100% Canadian!! Yeah for grade B! Your post made me miss my cousins in Ontario…oh what great fun I had visiting them every summer, not to mention that my first kiss was Canadian too π

A pie made out of one of my most favourite things ever, maple syrup…it just doesn’t get better than that. Thank you π
turkey hill says
I just made a pecan pie with maple syrup and maple cream. I added I think too much flour. just found your recipe. i figure next time I shouldn’t use the maple cream or omit the flour. Maple cream is just maple syrup cooked longer to get real thick.
I love pecans. Take fresh not rancid pecans. cook them in maple syrup till it gets all foamy. then bake them in the oven to dry off.
Same thing with bacon but cook it only half way in the frying pan then simmer the bacon in maple syrup. Let it get all foamy and dry on a dish in a warm oven.
