The Muppet Movie comes out on DVD today. I am a nerd and preordered it. I can’t help it. I loved the Muppets as a kid and seeing the movie last Thanksgiving just warmed my little heart. There truly is a character for everyone.
The science nerd in me loves Beaker. The sarcastic person in me loves Statler and Waldorf. For no apparent reason I love Gonzo’s girlfriend Camilla the Chicken. And of course my favorite of all time is the Swedish Chef. What about you, who is your favorite Muppet?
Pigs in Space could always cheer me up and when Elton John sang Crocodile Rock in the swamp with the crocs singing along it was the first song ever to get stuck in my head. 🙂
I have nothing but fond memories of that show so to show my support for the release I decided to make cupcakes with rainbow swirl frosting. It would have been much easier if I owned gel food coloring but I do not. But as you can see they still turned out just fine.
Rainbow Connection Cupcakes
Buttermilk Cupcakes
2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
½ tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
¾ tsp. salt
½ cup unsalted butter, room temperature
1 cup granulated sugar
3 large whole eggs plus 1 egg yolks, room temperature
1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
1 tsp. vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line standard muffin tins with paper liners. Sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
Using a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, cream butter and sugar on medium-high until pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
Reduce speed to medium. Add whole eggs, one at a time, beating until each is incorporated, scraping down sides of bowl as needed. Add yolks, and beat until thoroughly combined.
Reduce speed to low. Add flour mixture in three batches, alternating with two additions of buttermilk, and beating until combined after each. Beat in vanilla.
Divide batter evenly among lined cups, filling each three-quarter full. Bake, rotating tins halfway through, until cupcakes spring back when lightly touched and a cake tester inserted in centers comes out clean, about 20 minutes. Transfer tins to wire racks to cool 10 minutes; turn out cupcakes onto racks and let cool completely.

For frosting use this. Depending on how much you love frosting you might want to double it. Follow this tutorial on how to make it rainbow.

It comes out today!? How was I unaware of this. My favorite is actually Pepe the king prawn, he cracks me up.

I didn’t know it came out today!!! Yay! I had serious intentions of taking my oldest to the theater to see it (I established an early love of Muppets in her), but never did. Maybe I can sneak out when my husband gets home… (my youngest has a nasty contagious rash virus I don’t want to share).
My mom always sang Rainbow Connection to me as a kid, so it’s sort of our ‘thing’ together and always holds a special place in my heart 🙂 So these cupcakes made me smile today!

I love Elmo!
Thanks for linking to the frosting technique; I’ll be trying that this week for a co-worker’s birthday.

Is Kermit a Muppet? So him then. He’s my fave — His voice makes me smile just like that swirly colorful frosting on those cute cupcakes. 🙂
Peabody says
@Kellypea- yes Kermit is the original badass Muppet!

I love the Muppets but have sadly not yet seen the movie. I think my brother is picking it up today so I’ll hopefully see it on the weekend. I suppose if I had to pick my favourite it would probably be Animal, as a kid I loved every time he was on screen 🙂 (Remember when Animal met Cookie Monster? Classic :)). Muppet Babies… also great :).
And that frosting hurts my brain :), but the payoff is great, these look fantastic.

The new movie is pretty much the only thing my husband has asked for for his birthday. 🙂 We’re Muppets nerds as well and LOVED the movie.
I’ve always had a soft spot for Gonzo. 🙂
I was lucky enough to see Kermit and Rowlf perform “Rainbow Connection” at the D23 Expo last August (a Disney fan expo). Every single person there had tears in their eyes. It was amazing.

I haven’t seen the movie yet… Looks like I’ll have to buy it!

Thanks for reminding me! I’ll have to see if the Redbox has it when I’m at the grocery store.
Those cupcakes look delicious…my sweet tooth is way out of hand lately!
I love Kermit, Statler & Waldorf. At my friend’s request, I learned to play “Rainbow Connection” on my banjo for her wedding.

My husband LOVES Animal and the Swedish Chef. I don’t know that I really have a favorite, but I always appreciated Miss Piggy.. proof that the slightly thicker lady can still come out on top and get the guy…er…frog.

Old school muppets – has to be Kermit. Him in the swamp singing “It’s not easy being green” used to make me cry. (Sensitive much?)
New muppets – Pepe, the king prawn. Love him.
I own all the muppet movies. Muppets From Space is hilarious. When I need a cheer up I watch it :)Hasn’t failed me yet. P.S. – the cupcakes look lovely!

I love the color of the frosting you have here. It’s just so cheery and happy like.
I didn’t grow up with the muppets so the only ones I know are Miss Piggy and Kermit. I like Kermit. He’s green, and a frog, and he makes me smile. 🙂

I LOVE the Swedish Chef!

Rainbow Connection is going to be stuck in my head all day, and listening to Crocodile Rock is not getting rid of it…

Looks like I will have a project to do now that the great grand kids are coming over this weekend.
I’ll have them help me make these beautiful cupcakes and I bet they will be delicious!
Thanks,

I am a huge Muppet fan! I dragged my hubby to the most recent Muppet Movie and he surprisingly like it too, despite the fact he had no idea it was a musical (lol said the same thing when we went to go see the Disney movie Tangled). My favorite Muppet is Gonzo, though Piggy, Kermit and Pepe the King Prawn are all close after him. I’m trying to collect all of the Muppet Show DVD’s, and I would love to own all the movies.
